Abstract
With use of a simple version of the optical background representation for the transition amplitude in the case of well nested doorways, an alternate statistical theory of multistep compound reactions is suggested, which is valid under very general conditions. Simple connections are estalished between the present approach and that of Feshbach, Kerman, and Koonin and of Agassi, Weidenmüller, and Mantzouranis. Keywords
