THE SITE OF ACCUMULATION OF Tc99m SODIUM PERTECHNETATE IN A HUMAN BRAIN TUMOR (ACOUSTIC NEUROMA)

Abstract
Using autoradiography, the site of accumulation of Tc99m sodium pertechnetate in acoustic neuromas was studied in 6 patients. Autoradiographs demonstrated the site of radionuclide accumulation to be present almost exclusively in the tumor cells and this uptake was striking. The radioactivity within the tumor cells was principally in the nuclei. This investigation indicates that acoustic neuromas are visualized on Tc99m brain scans because of the presence of radioactive material in the tumor cells and supports the concept that other brain tumors are visualized on scans because of similar tumor cell accumulation of Tc99m.
