Abstract
The spectrum of doubly ionized chromium, Cr III, has been observed by using a low-voltage sliding-spark discharge. Exposures were made on the 10.7-m normal-incidence vacuum spectrograph at the National Bureau of Standards, Washington, and the 3-m normal-incidence spectrograph at our institute. About 950 lines have been identified in the region 750-2 680 Å as combinations of the type 3d 4-3d 34p and 3d 34s-3d 34p, establishing 180 of the 182 possible levels with an estimated uncertainty of less than ±0.3 cm-1. The energy parameters determined from a least-squares fit of the observed level values are compared with Hartree-Fock calculations. From the observed 3d 4 levels forbidden lines of Cr III are predicted. Keywords
