Abstract
Replicative cultures of human prostatic epithelial cells from normal and neoplastic tissues provide a unique model in which to investigate the etiology of prostatic cancer and to compare the efficacy of therapeutic agents. Recently developed and available methods were used to isolate and characterize epithelial lines from normal neonatal prostate and from metastatic cancer tissue. A normal prostatic epithelial line was transformed in vitro by SV-40 virus. Properties of normal, cancer-derived and transformed normal cells were compared. The use of these cultures now permits direct experimentation on human cells that would not be feasible by other means.
