Abstract
The first part of this paper reviews the known hazards of the main components in the commonly used epoxy resin systems in the U.K. These resins have now been in commercial use for about 20 years and to date no significant systemic intoxication has been discovered. The hazard has largely been confined to the skin, for both uncured resins and hardeners can cause dermatitis after repeated skin contact and, more rarely, sensitization. Amine hardeners are more irritating than the uncured resins; and the latter become more inert as their molecular weight, and hence their viscosity, increases. The health experience in two large resin manufacturing plants is quoted and the incidence of skin disease over several years is given for one of them. The second part of the paper deals with the personal and plant protective measures which should be adopted in the industrial application of resin systems.
