Abstract
The chromosomes are the undoubted mechanism for the transmission of characters which follow Mendel''s law in inheritance. But the more general features of organization are not so inherited. They follow a law described by Galton as blending inheritance. The cytoplasm of the egg-cell affords a suitable mechanism for the transmission of blending characters, although it must be recognized that genes borne in chromosomes may modify such characters. Evidence is needed as to whether the sperm as well as the egg functions in plasmatic inheritance. Keywords
