Effect of Dicumarol on Localized Shwartzman Reaction.

Abstract
In view of the fact that the Shwartzman reaction is inhibited by heparin, the effect on this reaction of an anticoagulant with a somewhat different mechanism of action was investigated. One group of rabbits was treated with dicumarol until the prothrombin time was 40 seconds or greater. A 2d group received no dicumarol. Each group was then treated with the standard procedure used for producing dermal Shwartzman reactions using toxin prepared from meningococcus strain 44B. Since there was no difference in incidence of hemorrhagic necrosis in the 2 groups, it is concluded that heparin does not inhibit the dermal Shwartzman through any property it has in common with dicumarol.
