Abstract
Four series of 4-alkoxyphenyl 4′cyano or nitrobenzoyloxy 2″ or 3″-chlorobenzoates have been synthesized and various mesophases have been identified. A discussion of the relationships between the general molecular structure (relative direction of the different permanent dipoles) and the polymorphism is given. These series provide some interesting sequences including the first example of a SA2–SAd transition directly observable through a microscope. Keywords
