TRANSFORMATION of the kidney by fatty replacement of parenchyma destroyed by various diseases was first reported in European medical literature in the nineteenth century. The entity has received only cursory attention, primarily in urological journals in this country. There are many situations in which fat may be laid down in areas in the body undergoing a decrease in mass of a functioning tissue. Renal replacement lipomatosis (fatty transformation of the kidney) is one of these nonspecific reactions of the body in which fat deposition may follow destruction of portions or all of the kidney.
