Abstract
This paper is a condensed FEL tutorial and consideration of the FEL as a driver for a laser particle accelerator. The basic FEL mechanism is described and the commonality of the various FEL schemes is identified. It is seen that the FEL has many characteristics suitable for the laser particle accelerator including high power, high efficiency, and wavelength tuneability. The FEL peak power is limited by the accelerator that drives it, and this peak power may be lower than desirable for the laser particle accelerator.
