Adrenal Function in the Rhesus Monkey after Total-Body X-Irradiation

Abstract
The effect of total-body X-irradiation on adrenocortical function in the rhesus monkey was studied. Significant elevations in plasma concentrations of 17-OHCS were observed 4 hours after an irradiation session and generally again just prior to death. The increased steroid levels could not be attributed to a decrease in cortisol metabolism, since no significant difference in cortisol half-life was observed between irradiated and sham-irradiated monkeys. Adrenocortical capacity, as measured by the increase in 17-OHCS after exogenous ACTH, was elevated after X-irradiation.
