Abstract
To the Editor: The association of objectively documented splenic infarction in persons with electrophoretically proved sickle-cell trait has been reported in only four cases,1 2 3 and two of the patients were white.2 , 3 In 12 additional cases the diagnosis of sickle-cell trait was strongly implied by hemoglobin electrophoresis, which reportedly showed the amount of hemoglobin A (Hb A) to be larger than that of hemoglobin S (Hb S).4 5 6 7 The precise percentage of Hb S, however, was not stated. In three other cases the percentage of Hb S was reported, and so the possibility of any diagnosis other than sickle-cell trait was excluded. . . .
