Abstract
Spectroscopic investigations into solutions of alkali polysulphides in dimethylformamide showed that the formal oxidation state of the species giving rise to the intense blue colour of these solutions is –½. With the actual charge found to be one half of that of a polysulphide ion, the species is identified as the supersulphide ion, S2 –.Keywords
