Abstract
Larvae of E. ignotus survived up to 4 years in vitro in sterile surroundings at 20[degree]C. During that time they experienced a severe lack of oxygen without being damaged. The worms tolerate a partial lack of O2 at 37[degree] also, but are asphyxiated if the O2 is completely excluded. They did not feed under anaerobic conditions, but consumed about 3 times as much glycogen from their body reserves as did worms starving under aerobic conditions.
