New Fossil Fruit (Compositae) from the Pliocene of Western Kansas

Abstract

Achaenites kansanum is described as the first Compositae achene to be recovered from the Pliocene Ogallala Formation. The description of this achene is based on a silicified specimen found in association with other fossils characteristic of the Ogallala Formation in the escarpment on the south-west side of Clark County State Lake, Clark County, Kansas.
