Abstract
A complete phenomenological analysis of uniaxial stress-induced spin flop in is given. The origins of the magnetic anisotropy and magnetoelastic interaction are discussed. The microscopic theory of the single-ion anisotropy and magnetoelastic interaction in ruby is reviewed, updated, and extended to .
