Abstract
A policy on HIV disease is essential for probation departments as an increasing number of probationers become infected with the virus. The proposed policy applies to both employees and clients of probation departments. It is based on the assumption that HIV is not casually transmissible and, therefore, neither probation officers nor court personnel are at risk of being infected through the routine performance of their duties. The policy protects those with HIV infection, discourages mandatory HIV testing, maximizes confidentiality, and insists on HIV education. The rationale and implementation of each policy recommendation is discussed. Keywords
