Preparation of Ge-S Glass Fibers with Reduced OH, SH Content

Abstract
Content of OH and SH impurities in Ge-S glasses, which have disturbed the development of low-loss Ge-S glass fibers in the 3–6 µm wavelength region, are reduced by heating the starting materials at 400–500°C under S2Cl2 vapour flow. The absorption losses caused by the OH and SH impurities are lowered one-fourth of the initial values. Optical losses lower than 1 dB/m are achieved at four wavelengths: 2.4, 3.3, 4.7 and 5.1 µm.
