Abstract
To the Editor: The results of the study by Foti and his colleagues in the December 22, 1977, issue of the Journal could have been communicated much more effectively if the authors had adopted the terms "sensitivity," "specificity" and "confidence" (or "predictive value"), as recommended long ago in the Journal by Vecchio,1 and as discussed at great length more recently by Galen and Gambino.2 Considering only the hospital patients, their results comparing the two methods are as follows: sensitivity, 69 per cent (79/113) for radioimmunoassay and 28 per cent (32/113) for enzyme assay; specificity, 92 per cent (154/167) for . . .Keywords
