Abstract
M. Grosset-Grange has spent most of his life as a mariner, and has recently voyaged in the Indian Ocean on board a dhow. He thus brings to this study of early Arab sailing directions a wealth of practical experience. The article examines the information to be deduced from the works of Sulaiman al-Mahri and Ahmad ibn Majid (written between 1460 and 1530) in regard to the East African coast and the Indian Ocean, with particular attention to the Sofaliya of Ibn Majid. Identifications of places mentioned in these works are proposed and suggestions are made with regard to the routes followed across the ocean. It is indicated that some of the information possessed by the Arabs in regard to the further East derived from Indian, Indonesian, and perhaps Chinese origin.
