Abstract
The correct choice of boundary conditions for applying hydrodynamics to molecular transport properties has been widely discussed. In this paper, we explore the possibility that flow birefringence data can be used to distinguish between the stick and slip boundary conditions. We present results for the flow birefringence from ellipsoidal particles. We discuss the related phenomena of the Rytov dip in depolarized light scattering. We report calculations for this dip for both boundary conditions. The use of mixed boundary conditions is also discussed. Keywords
