Abstract
Triage is the most important single factor in combat casualty management In developing a mass casualty plan for an amphibious assault ship (LPH) designed to serve as a casualty receiving treatment ship (CRTS), a triage system with flexibility and safeguards designed to overcome shortfalls in personnel and facilities was instituted incorporating a triage scale developed for civilian field trauma care. A review of the current status of trauma severity indices found the CRAMS scale to be most appropriate for triage needs aboard the LPH. Past military trauma experience, current civilian trauma experience, and future combat casualty scenarios should be used to develop a triage score that is specific for modern combat casualty management
