Direct neutron observation of a single-incommensurate phase of quartz at zero stress

Abstract
We have used very high-resolution neutron diffraction to prove the existence of a "single-" incommensurate quartz phase at zero stress directly. The transition from the single- to the "triple-" state is first order.
