An Hypothesis to Explain the Incidence of Monophagy

Abstract
An insect's choice of food plant is assumed to be based on a simple decision rule that maximizes the expected production of offspring. Monphagy or polyphagy may be favored, depending on the proportion of an extended diet that would be unsuitable if chosen, versus the difficulty in finding the most suitable food.
