A RECONSIDERATION OF THE EVIDENCE CONCERNING A DORSO-VENTRAL PRE-ORGANIZATION OF THE EGG OF CHÆTOPTERUS

Abstract
A reconsideration of the evidence for the existence of a dorso-ventral axis in the unfertilized Chaetopterus egg shows that the former conclusion was not justified, since it was based on the assumption that the germinal vesicle is excentric in the polar axis and also in the postulated dorso-ventral axis. The various possibilities of the orientation of the eggs as they come to rest in the bottom of a dish or in the centrifuge are considered. The original assumption that there is a definite lighter side of the egg is not established, but is the outcome of the relation of the cleavage place to the pole.
