Abstract
A case history of unilateral atresia of the internal auditory meatus is reported. The acoustic and vestibular function was absent while that of the facial nerve was present. We suppose that the internal auditory meatus was occupied only by the facial nerve, and based on embryological facts we find it justified to consider the osseous atresia of the internal auditory meatus as a secondary phenomenon to a retarded development of the 8th cranial nerve. Keywords
