Abstract
We have determined the directions of transition moments of several organic compounds, at room temperature. by dissolving them in p-methoxybenzylidene-p-n-butylaniline oriented by mechanical treatment, and measuring their spectral absorption by use of the polarized light. This method on the other hand has been found to be very convenient for the determination of the orientational order parameter of the nematic phase. For one compound, not only the monomer State but also the aggregate state was found to be polarized along the long molecular axis. In the case of azobenzene, it has been found that the directions of the long molecular axis and of the dipole transition moment do not coincide. Keywords
