Abstract
A 25% random sample of site managers of facilities in metropolitan counties of Illinois was surveyed to determine how prepared the site staff were to handle residents' loss of functional independence and what actions were taken in such cases. Most sites lacked adequate sized staff and staff trained to monitor an aging population. There appears to be no clear policies or standards regarding when to retain or transfer residents. On-site staff appeared equally unprepared to locate or provide adequate support or locate transfer sites that could provide the proper support.
