The Empirical Selection of a Punisher for a Retarded Child's Self-Injurious Behavior:

Abstract
Finger gnawing behavior in a 5-year-old retarded boy was greatly reduced using a lemon juice punisher. This technique was empirically selected by sequentially implementing four punishment procedures that gradually increased in level of aversiveness of the consequence stimulus. The advantages of using a multiple baseline design to select an effective punishment technique are discussed.
