Abstract
The nation's solid wastes increasingly pose a major threat to the environment. Each year U.S. citizens must collect and dispose, in one fashion or another, some 250 billion lb of solid waste a yr, somewhat less than 1,500 lb per capita per yr (4) or about 4 lb per capita per day. One way of processing and reducing some of this waste is to burn it, but a way must be found to dispose of the ash.
