Abstract
The following physical characteristics, measured after immersion in KI solution, show significant age differences: contraction time, elongation, over elongation, breakability and elasticity. Citric, oxalic, ascorbic, acetic, lactic and fumaric acids all decreased contraction time. The first three also influenced elongation. Elasticity was increased most by ascorbic acid. The swelling of fibers and binding of the acids were less in older animals. After collagenase, the fibers of younger animals disintegrated and could not be reconstituted. In older animals gel formation occurred but fibers could be reconstituted. Ascorbic acid gave more intense reactions after collagenase treatment, and binding was increased in contrast with the other acids.
