Abstract
The R variants of C. histolyticum agglutinate well with an antiserum prepared against the normal S form, but the S organisms did not agglutinate with an anti-R serum. This was due to the absence on the R organisms of a polysaccharide-containing surface antigen, which was normally present on the S organisms. The polysaccharide was extracted from the S bacteria with hot N/20 HC1. After purification, it gave a positive Molisch test, a negative xanthoproteic test, and a slightly positive Biuret test. It reacted with anti-S serum in a dilution of 1:1,500,000 but did not react with anti-R serum. This publication has 6 references indexed in Scilit:
