On the Gram reaction of Caryophanon latum

Abstract
When Caryophanon latum was grown such that natural morphology was the major criterion of adequate growth, it was consistently found to be Gram-positive. Treatment with "Gram-specific" antibiotics, dyes, and other chemicals, supported this finding. The effect of various growth conditions (pH, nutrition, and temperature) on the Gram reaction was studied. Variable staining results occurred when growth conditions supported poor morphology of C. latum. The Gram-negative reaction of this organism obtained by some other workers is attributed to inadequate nutritional or other conditions which result in abnormal morphology.
