Abstract
Measurements in the 6 3P1 state of Hg197 yield a hyperfine structure splitting of 23 083.4±6.7 Mc. Such accuracy is possible in a strictly optical experiment because the change in intensity of scattered light observed at a Zeeman-level crossing is unaffected by Doppler broadening. Keywords
