Abstract
A number of recent American Medical Association announcements, each intended to state the Association's position relative to diet and heart disease, may have had the combined effect of promoting confusion. It is the purpose of this editorial to attempt to review the situation and to state clearly and unequivocally the position of the American Medical Association on this subject. The statement of the Council on Foods and Nutrition entitled "The Regulation of Dietary Fat" was published in the Aug 4 issue of The Journal (181:411-429, 1962). This statement dealt with the possible use by the physician of diets of varied fat content in the management of patients with a variety of disorders, including hyperlipidemias. A news release was issued by the Association in order to prevent misinterpretation of this statement.
