Abstract
Samples of the semen of the ovoviviparous elasmobranchs Lamna cornubica (1530 g) and Galeus vulgaris (50 g) and of the oviparous species Scylliorhinus caniculus (96 g) and Raja batis (11 g) were collected and separately extracted with chloroform-methanol. Steroid fractions were concentrated by partition between light petroleum and 70% methanol and further purified by paper chromatography in the light petroleum-methanol and chloroform-formamide systems. The chromatograms were then examined for the presence of neutral and phenolic steroids. No steroids were detected in any of the semen samples examined. These results contrast with those of the semen of Squalus acanthias in which a high concentration of 11-deoxycorticosterone (500 [mu]g/100 g) together with minor quantities of progesterone, dehydro epiandrosterone, pregn-5-en-3[beta]-ol-20-one, androst-4-ene-3:17-dione and possibly androsterone were identified. Keywords
