Abstract
To demonstrate carbohydrate moieties of glycoprotein in the cells of normal rat thyroid and anterior pituitary, concanavalin A[Con A]-iron dextran technique was applied to thin sections conventionally prepared for EM. In the thyroid gland, sugar residues reacted with Con A were observed in the cisternae of rough endoplasmic reticulum, subapical vesicles, lysosomes, colloid droplets of follicular cells and the colloid in the follicle lumen. Sugar residues were also observed in the secretory granules of gonadotrophos, thyrotrophs and corticotrophs of the anterior pituitary. On the lysosomes of all types of pituitary cells, a large number of reaction deposits were observed. Only a small amount of sugar residues were located in the periphery of secretory granules of somatotrophs and mammotrophs.
