Abstract
A follow-up study of 693 patients discharged from two nursing homes over a 9-year period was made to determine their life course. Half of the respondents appeared to have been discharged inappropriately. Discharge planners should consider the emotional, physical, and social effects of a change in environment upon the chronically ill aged patient. Emphasis should. be placed on the development of appropriate criteria for admission and discharge of the ill elderly person to and from the hospital, nursing care facility, and patient's own home. Keywords
