Abstract
A systematic investigation of the accuracy of the measurement of sedimentation constants by means of the Svedberg oil-turbine ultracentrifuge has shown that the values are reproducible and accurate to 0.5% if conditions are standardized. A new method of computing the sedimentation constant is given. Examination of the accuracy of estimation of the quantity of a sedimenting component from the boundary diagram given by the diagonal-schlieren method of Philpot (1938) has shown that under favorable conditions a single measurement may have a standard deviation of 2.5% making an accuracy of 1% attainable from the data of a single run. Special attention is needed to the fitting of the base line and an improved method of doing this is descr. This publication has 3 references indexed in Scilit:
