Abstract
An automatic thermal‐expansion apparatus is described in which the device for sensing sample dilation is a linear variable differential transformer. The equipment plots temperature vs. expansion using a two‐function recording potentiometer. The linear variable transformer was chosen because of insensitivity to thermal changes and to horizontal misalignment, flexibility of range and sensitivity, and small size. Performance data are presented for a number of tests and the advantages and disadvantages of the equipment are discussed. The electrical circuit necessary for adapting the sensing device to this particular use is also described. Keywords
