Family Context and the Development of Adolescent Decision-making

Abstract
The role of the social/cultural context in which adolescent development takes place is being increasingly acknowledged in the literature. Major Changes in Parent-adolescent Relationships According to what might be described as this social-relational perspective, changes in parent-adolescent relationships are gradual and continuous, rather than simply dictated by age or maturation. Communication is generally considered to be one of the basic dimensions of parent-adolescent relationships. Family Context and the Development of Adolescent Decision-making include a comprehensive list of issues of concern within the adolescent-parent relationship. From the perspective of the parents, adolescent decision making follows very similar broad patterns across populations. Cardiff adolescents have more freedom to decide at an earlier age than the adolescents from Bologna. Bologna adolescents decide earlier than the adolescents in the Groningen sample. Adolescent and parent groups within one culture seem to refer to similar scripts, there are also systematic differences between the adolescent and the parent groups.
