Systematic Position of Filaria helicina Molin, 1858, from the Brain Cavity of the Snakebird, Anhinga anhinga

Abstract
An examination of a number of nematodes collected by R. A. Norris from the brain cavity of the snake-bird, A. anhinga, in Florida, of F. anhingae Wyman, 1868 (later changed to F. helicina Molin, 1858), collected from the same host and locality as those by Norris, and of F. helicina Molin, 1858, collected by Natterer from Plotus anhinga (A. anhinga) in Brazil and deposited in the Vienna Mus. showed that all were similar and belonged to the same sp. Walton (1927), in his revision of the nematodes of the Leidy Collection, redescribed and refigured Leidy''s material and renamed it as Serratospiculum helicina (Molin, 1858). The present authors erected a n. subfam., ANHINGOFILARIINAE, and a n. gen., WYMANIA for the snakebird nematodes, retaining helicina as the specific name since it has priority over the name anhingae which was used by Wyman in 1868.
