Abstract
A calculation of the position and width of the (1688) pion-nucleon resonance is made. Inelastic unitarity is used to generate the dynamics where single-pion exchange coupling to states provides an approximation for the force. Good agreement with experiment is obtained. A similar mechanism for generating higher resonances is suggested.
