Abstract
The theoretical basis for the trapping of charged particles in a three-dimensional, rotationally symmetric, quadrupole field is discussed. The authors have constructed both a sensitive mass spectrometer and an ion gauge based on ion storage. This paper presents background material for this work, based on numerically computed solutions to the differential equations of motion. Predictions are obtained concerning ion trajectories, resolution, sensitivity, storage, and peak shape.
