Compressibility Behavior of Soft Lignite

Abstract
The compressibility behavior of the Megalopolis (Greece) soft, earthy lignite is investigated by one-dimensional and triaxial consolidation tests in a wide pressure range. The material behaves as a typical preconsolidated clay and consolidates according to Terzaghi theory, exhibiting a significant secondary compression. The virgin curves from w-log p diagrams fall in the same zone as for known German and Australian lignites. The compressibility, coefficient of consolidation, and coefficient of secondary compression, investigated under various loading conditions, are influenced both by the stress history and the change in structure occuring at a pressure of about 260 psi (1800 kPa).
