Abstract
The simultaneous extraction of volatile fatty acids (VFA) and simple phenols and indoles from sedimentation dust from a pig house for gas chromatographic analysis is carried out using ethanol as an extraction solvent. Some investigations on the material composition of the dust are performed as well. By ethanolic extraction 7 VFA, 3 phenols, and 2 indoles are identified. As far as quantity is concerned acetic acid (267 .mu.g/g dust) and p-cresol (145 .mu.g/g dust) dominate, amounting to 43% and 53% of the total VFA and phenolic/indolic compounds, respectively. Relative comparisons show satisfactory agreement to results of investigations on slurry and air as stated in the literature. When evaluating odor emissions from pig facilities by either chemical or sensory methods the role of dust-borne odors should not be ignored.
