Abstract
Elsewhere in this issue of the Journal Cox and his co-workers call attention to a possible relation between the administration of novobiocin and the development of hepatic dysfunction. The case is reported because of its interest in relation to the possible toxicity of one of the useful antibiotics.Administration of novobiocin has occasionally been associated with yellow discoloration of the sclerae,1 elevation of the icteric index or increased values for the indirect diazo reaction for bilirubin.2 , 3 It has been assumed that this was due to a yellow metabolite of novobiocin, rather than to actual retention of unconjugated bilirubin.3 , 4 Cox et . . .
