Abstract
Nesting boxes designed to accommodate black-bellied tree ducks (Dendrocygna autumnalis) were inspected for nesting success during 1963-65. Boxes without protection from terrestrial predators were gradually replaced by those with predator-proof sheetmetal guards. Natural cavity nests were additionally inspected beginning in 1962. Nests in predator-proof boxes were 77% successful whereas those in unprotected nesting boxes and natural cavities were 46 and 44% successful, respectively. If a minimum of 70% nesting success is desired for management purposes, nesting boxes must be provided with protection from predators.
