Effect of Biotin on the Bacterial Formation of Glutamic Acid

Abstract
Cells of Brevibacterium flavum in biotin-rich medium completely oxidize glucose and pyruvate to CO2. Biotin-deprived cells metabolize glucose to CO2 and [alpha]-ketoglutarate. Cells in biotin-rich medium accumulate L-glutamate when detergents (cetyltrimethylam-monium bromide, dodecylsulfate or deoxycholate) are added to reaction mixture. These detergents may make cell membrane permeable to glutamate.
