Abstract
Almost all aphids are known to contain numerous large cells in the body cavity (mycetocytes) which enclose many spherical intracellular particles. Previous investigators have considered these particles to be symbiotic microorganisms belonging either to the yeast genera Saccharomvces and Aphidomyces, or to the bacterial genus Azotobacter. Electron microgram and phase microscopy studies, coupled with the fact that the presence of desoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) cannot be demonstrated in these intracellular particles, leads the author to conclude that these particles are not microorganisms, but instead are merely cell particulates.
